What I’m Learning from Tony Evans’ “Prayers for Spiritual Warfare”

If you’re like me, for many years, the idea of spiritual warfare was something I didn’t want to think about or even acknowledge.

The thought of an enemy working against us felt overwhelming, and honestly, it just made me feel scared.

But as I’m reading Tony Evans’ book Prayers for Spiritual Warfare, I’m realizing that avoiding this truth doesn’t protect us—it leaves us vulnerable. And we don’t have to be afraid, because with God, we have every reason to stand strong.

So here’s the craziest thing I read in Prayers for Spiritual Warfare. I’ve only just started reading it, but even in the first few pages, there are two things that completely blew. my. mind. I literally wrote “this is crazy” in the margin of my book!!

Here’s a little backstory: In the book of Daniel, Daniel is praying to God, and God sends an angel with a message of understanding for him. But there’s a delay—because a demon, referred to as the Prince of Persia, blocks Gabriel, the angel, for three whole weeks. Gabriel couldn’t reach Daniel because of a spiritual battle happening in the heavenly realms! (CRAZY, right?) God had responded immediately to Daniel’s prayer, but it took time for that response to reach him because of this warfare.

This part hit me hard: “Your battle is fought in the spiritual realm.”

Oh, like the thing I’ve been avoiding this whole time. Cool.

The book goes on to tell us that if we don’t realize that, we can’t fight to win.

I don’t know about you, but I want to fight to win!!

It’s like a wake-up call reminding us that while we may not see it, there’s a battle raging in the spiritual realm, and our prayers are a key part of the fight.

When we pray, when we lean on God’s Word, and when we bring His truth (scripture) into our prayers, we are engaging in a battle that affects our lives, our families, our communities—even entire nations.

So here’s my encouragement: let’s be prayer warriors.

Let’s stand firm and incorporate God’s Word into our prayers, trusting that even if we don’t see immediate results, God is working.

Our prayers matter—they have power. So let’s lean in, pray with intention, and remember that God hears us, even when there’s a delay.

This is our fight, and with God on our side, it’s a fight we’re meant to win!! Let’s go!!
